The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has condemned the growing intolerance in the country’s major political parties, fearing this will prevent able and well-meaning candidates from participating in elections.
NAP chairperson Benedicto Kondowe, who addressed journalists in Lilongwe on Saturday, said the platform is particularly concerned that the intolerance is growing at a time major political parties are approaching conventions in August 2024.
He warned that these internal political battles and intolerance could pose a threat to the country’s progress.

“The politics of betrayal, cheating, ballot fraud, taking down opponents, and intimidation practiced by major political parties are particularly concerning. These actions detract from substantive issues and hinder our collective potential for meaning development,” he said.
Kondowe further recommended that political parties must foster an environment of tolerance, unity, and constructive dialogue, emphasizing that internal strife not only disrupts governance, but also hampers the potential for collaborative progress.
“We condemn the divisive tactics and urge all political actors to prioritize the nation’s interests, work together towards common goals, and create a platform for inclusive and constructive dialogue during the conventions The upcoming party conventions should serve as an opportunity for political actors to demonstrate their commitment to national progress and unity. By embracing tolerance and focusing on substantive issues, we can ensure that the conventions contribute positively to the political landscape and the overall development of Malawi,” he said.

The organization has also appealed to political parties to embrace tolerance and unity, ensuring that the upcoming conventions serve as a platform for constructive dialogue and collective advancement.
“By building on our successes and fostering a collaborative political environment, we can achieve a brighter and more prosperous future for all Malawians,” said Kondowe.
