LG Electronics (LG) East Africa has launched its energy-efficient Mirror InstaView Refrigerator in the Kenyan market. Designed to help households manage their energy consumption in the face of rising electricity tariffs, the 635-litre LG Mirror InstaView refrigerator uses only 699 units (699KWh) of electricity per year—equivalent to less than 2 units per day, costing consumers not more than KSh 50 daily. This cost-efficiency is impressive for an appliance that delivers 36 cubic feet of refrigeration capacity and 8.6 cubic feet of freezer space.

The fridge’s launch comes at a crucial time, with electricity tariffs at an all-time high and concerns over potential future increases, a worrisome trend when households are already grappling with soaring inflation, which reached 3.5% in February 2025—the highest rate since October 2024. As the cost of living continues to rise, Kenyan consumers are increasingly turning to energy-efficient appliances to curb household expenses, particularly in the home appliance segment, which accounts for 50-60% of household energy consumption, according to a recent study published in the University of Nairobi’s research repository[1].

The study also highlights that 80% of Kenyan households own and regularly use appliances like refrigerators, TVs, Hi-Fi music systems, and irons, underscoring the need for energy-efficient solutions. With the new Mirror InstaView Refrigerator, LG aims to address enhance energy usage by combining cutting-edge technology with smart design. The appliance uses a Smart Inverter Compressor, which yields up to 36% more energy saving compared to older compressor systems. It also features advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and smart technologies that help regulate energy use. For example, its Economic Care+ technology allows users to monitor their usage patterns and optimize their refrigerator’s performance for better efficiency, durability, and long-term savings.

Another standout feature of the Mirror InstaView fridge is its unique mirror interface. This innovative design allows users to check the contents of the fridge without opening the door, reducing energy wastage by minimizing cold air loss. Knocking twice on the glass panel activates the mirror, which transforms into a transparent window, providing an easy view of the fridge’s contents. Once the user is done, the surface seamlessly reverts to its stylish mirror finish, making it a perfect addition to any modern kitchen.

In addition to its energy-saving features, the LG Mirror InstaView refrigerator offers a range of other convenient functionalities. It comes with a water and ice dispenser that is built into the door, providing more storage in the freezer part.

LG’s innovative Door Cooling+ technology ensures that the interior of the refrigerator remains cool, even with frequent door openings. This feature is particularly beneficial in Kenya’s diverse climate, ranging from the humid coastal regions to the hotter, arid areas, and temperate highlands. The consistent cooling preserves freshness for longer, no matter the external temperature.

Speaking at the launch event, Donghun Lee, LG’s President for East Africa, emphasized the product’s relevance to consumers in the region. “At LG, we are committed to creating innovations that enhance the lives of our customers while promoting energy efficiency. The Mirror InstaView refrigerator embodies this mission—providing a sleek design, advanced features, and improved functionality, all while helping households reduce their energy consumption.”

The LG Mirror InstaView refrigerator is now available at LG’s partner outlets, including Opalnet and Hotpoint Appliances Ltd, as well as leading supermarkets across Kenya.
