Sports Director Edwin Kuria organises tournament to empower vulnerable women in Makadara

Renowned sports entrepreneur and Sports Kenya director Edwin Kuria in collaboration with Anna Semenova, a Russian national who runs an NGO Path To Russia, Monday August 4, 2025 organised a sports tournament held at Uhuru Sports Complex in Nairobi.

The Complex was a beehive of activities all day long as ladies from Makadara and communities from the surrounding areas came together for a sports event to empower the vulnerable in in society. Through the Africa Sportive Talang’ company, with support from Path To Russia organisation, the ladies competed in football, volleyball, basketball and netball.

Speaking at the event, Kuria said he plans to use Sports to advocate against Gender Based Violence the vulnerable girls and woman.

The tournament according to Kuria will be expanded to the whole of Makadara and the rest of Nairobi.

“This is just the beginning. Moving forward, we are planning to organise more friendly tournaments for the ladies in our communities around the entire Makadara and the rest of Nairobi,” Kuria said.

“This is a tournament for those around our community in the slums here and not for professionals. We want to empower them through sports. We are advocating for action against Gender Based Violence in our communities and the best way is by empowering the ladies by bringing them together to compete and get education and motivation,” Kuria noted.

Kuria, who is also the Chairman of the Kumi Bila Break movement took time to interact with the women getting to know their challenges and charting a Path through which, their challenges can be solved in unity.

Sports he said is one of the best ways to bring people together. At the end of the day, all teams were awarded with trophies, certificates, cash awards and pairs of jersies.

On her part, Anna from Path to Russia said that the tournament was aimed at empowering the women from the slums and congratulated all the participants of the tournament.

“We arranged this tournament together with our partner Edwin Kuria to have the women from the slums around this area engage in different sports as we encourage then and celebrate them,” Anna said.

Kuria announced that he plans to expand the tournament to tap children and men in these sports activities noting that plans are underway to have boxing, football, darts and other sports activities for the men in a similar tournament and ensure that everyone is reached and impacted.

The tournament attracted teams drawn dmfrom various parts of Makadara and the adjacent areas mainly from the slums and low income households around the area.
