The inaugural Moses Kuria Peace football tournament was on Saturday 9th March, 2024 officially launched at Kinoru Stadium in Meru County.
The tournament which is being played in the Mount Kenya region is sponsored by the Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria features teams from 66 constituencies drawn from 11 counties.
During the launch, graced by the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, CS Moses Kuria, area members of parliament, MCAs as well as Football Kenya President Nick Mwendwa, Kieni constituency team overpowered hosts North Imenti 3-1 to draw first blood when they scooped Ksh 250,000 cash prize on offer on the opening day of the tournament which has entered its third week.
The winning team will bag Ksh5 million after winning the finals which will be staged on June 2nd, 2024 at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
In zone A, Lari constituency leads on 7 points followed closely by Ruiru, Kabete, Kikuyu, Kiambaa constituencies all with 6 points. Kiambu are on one point wile Githunguri are yet to collect a point in the group.
In Zone B, Thika town are perched on top after winning all their three matches bagging the maximum 9 points followed by Kigumo, Kandara and Gatundu south on 6 points each, Gatanda on five points while Gatundu North and Juja constituencies with one point each while Maragua are yet to pick a point.
In Zone C, Othaya constituency have picked up the maximum 9 points followed by Mukurweini and Mathira on 7 points while Tetu constituency are on 4 points, Kiharu Nyeru Town and Othaya have one point each.
The last Group Matches will be played on April 13th, then proceed to the round of 16 on April 27th, 2024.
The quarter finals will be staged on May 4th-5th, 2024, then the semis between May 18th and 25th.
The third place play offs will be played to mark Madaraka Day celebrations before the finals being played on June 2nd, 2024.
“I thank the Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria for giving football priority. I know he has many other options of funding other sports disciplines like volleyball, netball, athletics and basketball among others but opted for football. We shall not disappoint him when staging the tournament,” said the tournament’s coordinator and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Executive Committee (NEC) Central region representative Davis Chege.
