Total Land Care, the implementer of the Faith in Farmers: Boosting Local Production for Food Security in Malawi Project by Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and DanChurchAid (DCA) in Mchinji District, reports that farmers in the area have adopted a transformed approach to farming, yielding meaningful results.
According to Total Land Care, farmers can now sell their harvests, generating income that supports household needs, including school fees, through micro-investment irrigation.
“Some farmers can now afford to pay school fees for their children. Recently, one farmer paid semester fees for his child at a public university,” said Project Field Officer Chifundo Thawiha.
Thawiha added that farmers are now investing in their farming activities, using a portion of their previous season’s earnings.
“We educated farmers on the importance of investing and reinvesting in farming, and they now understand its value,” he explained.
Chiwale Irrigation Scheme chairperson Symon Dymon concurred with Thawiha stating that the project has addressed initial challenges faced by farmers.
“Our hard work, combined with the project’s support, has made us proud. We now have successful farmers in the area,” said Dymon.
The project which benefits at least 1000 farmers from Mkanda and Kalulu Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) in Mchinji is financed by Norad through Nansen grant.
