EU calls for calm, peace among Malawians during Sept 16 General Elections

The European Union (EU) has appealed to Malawians to maintain peace and tranquility ahead of, during and after the September 16 General Elections, stressing that this is crucial in sustaining democracy and good governance.

EU Head of Cooperation, George Dura, made the appeal on the sidelines of a political debate held at Mbinzi LEA School in Lilongwe on Thursday.

The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust organized the debate in Lilongwe Bwaila Constituency with financial support from EU. Dura and his team attended the debate to appreciate how such events contribute towards building a democratic Malawi.

Dura emphasized the need for Malawians to maintaining peace and tranquility during the elections, warning that violence would plunge the country into chaos.

“I think Malawi has a very important treasure in that it’s a peaceful democracy, and it’s a treasure to be cherished and at every election. But also in between elections, the way that the process is conducted, the way that it’s transparent, inclusive, participatory, and allows for democratic space and debate, this will determine if it remains and continues to remain a peaceful democracy, which is so cherished in the world,” he said.

On the other hand, Dura expressed satisfaction with the way National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust conducts political debates to allow contestants and the electorate to engage in “serious discussions” on what needs to be done to develop their areas.

He said debates are key to fostering and entrenching democracy and good governance through political debates during election periods.

NICE District Programmes Officer Lilongwe Urban, Hajira Ali, said her organization is committed to fostering citizen engagement by encouraging accountability from public officials, promoting peaceful coexistence through dialogue, and using accessible methods like film shows to reach rural communities.
