DPP Dismisses Rigging Allegations, As Jappie Mhango Urges MCP to Accept The Will of Malawians

Main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has dismissed allegations that it was involved in the manipulation of the presidential poll results in favour of its torchbearer – Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika – in the recently-held September 22, 2025, General Elections.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) have separately addressed the media where allegations of vote rigging were made, fingering DPP as the culprit.

At a press briefing on Sunday, the MCP running mate, Vitumbiko Mumba, claimed the party has evidence of rigging, including ballot stuffing, as early results indicated it faced a major loss in a poll conducted at a time Malawians faced the hardest conditions of living.

Official results from a handful of districts have shown strong results for DPP torchbearer, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, with analysts positioning him for the return to the State House.

“Raw results do not match figures announced at the tally centre,” said Mumba, adding that the party has lodged a complaint with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

But DPP vice president responsible for the Northern Region, Jappie Mhango, at the party’s media briefing on Sunday evening, laughed off the claims, challenging MCP and UDF to provide evidence for its allegations.

“DPP was poised to win these elections because MCP has messed up everything. Denial will not MCP any far. They should just accept the poll results and let the will of the people prevail,” said Mhango who was flanked by his Central Region counterpart, Alfred Gangata, among others.

Mhango assured Malawians that the incoming DPP government is prepared to address the social and economic hardships that have weighed down lives of Malawians under the Chakwera administration.
