Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School, located in Misewufolo, Chikwawa district, has had a significant impact on the education sector by reducing the distance learners must travel to access education. Previously, students had to endure an 18-kilometer journey to Ngabu township in the district.
Statistics have shown a rapid increase in the number of school dropouts, with long distance being a key contributing factor. The Director of the school, Chifundo Petro, noted the prevalence of school dropouts, particularly among people with disabilities, which led to the decision to open the school in the area.
Petro emphasized that students with disabilities are not required to pay any fees, highlighting the school’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all. Many disabled individuals come from less privileged backgrounds and may have been forced to drop out of school due to financial constraints.
Since its establishment on September 16th for the academic year 2024/2024, the school has enrolled over 50 students. Regular students pay a nominal fee, and there are options for afternoon open lessons in all classes from Form 1 to Form 4.
Chrissy Tobias, a visually impaired student, expressed gratitude for the school’s establishment, citing the previous distance barrier that had hindered her education. She is now able to access education more easily at the new institution.
In addition to its academic facilities, the school also offers resources including a resource room, science laboratory, and library.
Chifundo Petro also operates the Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation Centre, providing free medication and advice to individuals with mental health challenges.
