The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust says it is keen on adding value to the 2025 General Elections through provision of high quality 360° civic and voter education in Malawi.
NICE Board Chairperson Lingalireni Mihowa, in an interview this week, said her organization has, over the years, gained significant expertise and experience in awareness raising through its structure, local observation, and peace building.
“The Trust will use this experience for the success of the 2025 elections,” said Mihowa.
In May this year, officials from NICE Public Trust took part in the South Africa General Elections observation owing to their role as major stakeholders on governance and elections.
NICE plays a significant role in mobilizing Malawians to take part in the elections.
According to Mihowa, observing the South African elections offered the NICE Public Trust an opportunity to assess the inclusivity of citizens in exercising their right to vote.
She also said her organization used the South Africa tour to enhance its capacity to implement the governance monitoring platform through the Electoral Situation Room (ESR) by learning from the South African counterparts.
“This is one way of enhancing electoral integrity and credibility. Through this mission, Malawi has acquired some lessons through the experiences which will contribute to the realization of civic and electoral rights and the promotion of public trust in electoral processes,” she said.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) recently announced that the 2025 General Elections will be held under the theme: “Promoting Democratic Leadership Through Your Vote.”
MEC Chairperson Judge Annabel Mtalimanja said the theme signifies the power that Malawians have in deciding their future through the casting of their ballots.
“By voting, Malawians have the power to shape their country’s leadership and governance, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their preferences are represented. The theme serves as a call to action for all eligible voters to participate in the upcoming General Election,” said Mtalimanja when she announced the theme in July 2024.
